City Park. Downtown Baton Rouge.

I harnessed Backup, snapped his leash onto his collar and left the building. A short three-block walk and we were at the park. Lined up along the sidewalk out front were the carts of the street vendors.

Hot dogs with anything you wanted piled on top. Tacos, burritos, fish and chips, burgers and fries, ribs and pulled pork. You name it and there was a truck or a cart with your name on it.

At lunch time, hungry customers were lined up in front of all of them.

Brad hollered to me from a bench under a tree and he already had our dogs and our drinks. A repeat of what we’d ordered the last time and that was okay with me.

I leaned down and kissed him before I sat down. “Hey, you got our dogs already. I must be slow getting here.”

“I wanted to get out of the office. Seems like all we’re doing is having budget meetings and there isn’t enough money for anything according to the accounting people. They want me to make cuts and I don’t see how I can cut anything more and still run my department.”

“Huh, sounds depressing.”

“Yeah, I don’t want to be depressing when you’re on such a high for some reason. Want to tell me why yesterday was such a winner for you?”

“I got a new tax accountant and he also said he might have future work for me. That made me pretty happy.”

“Okay, what else?”

“Does there have to be more?”

“I think there is more,” said Brad. “You can tell me I’m wrong and I won’t grill you.”

“Okay there is more,” I said. “The tax guy asked me to dinner. Dinner with a potential client, that’s all it was. I wasn’t going to tell you because you almost hemorrhaged out your eyes when I went running with Lance. I didn’t want to chance a repeat performance of you burning rubber on my driveway.”

Brad smiled. “Who’s the guy, Martina?”

“Tag Ruddell. He’s a tax specialist and he’s going to handle my situation. I can’t do my own taxes with the building and all that entails.”

“You haven’t told me all the details of your situation,” said Brad, “and it isn’t any of my business, but having a tax guy isn’t a bad idea.”

“That’s right. I need him and he said he sometimes needs an investigator. It might work out for both of us.”

“Can I ask where you met this guy all of a sudden?”

“He was Foley’s tax guy and I called him. He’s going over Foley’s last return to see if I should have been paying installments.”

“What?” Brad frowned at the word. “Installments are for people who make large incomes, aren’t they?”

“I don’t know. That’s what I have Tag for.”

Brad’s eyes widened. “We meet this guy yesterday and we’re calling him by his first name?”

I tried to shrug it off. “He’s an old friend of Foley’s and… never mind. I don’t have to explain it all to you.”

“No, you don’t,” said Brad. “We’ve never
